During the last week of June, our bright minds in STEM Club engineered their very own solar ovens to see if the recent sunshine was powerful enough to cook a treat entirely outdoors.
Using tinfoil and black paper, chosen specifically for its superior ability to absorb light and trap heat, students put their scientific knowledge into practice to construct the ovens. The creations were put to the test outside with a selection of s’mores and cupcakes.
STEM Club can confirm that the weather wasn’t quite hot enough to bake the cupcakes! Reflecting on the experiment, however, the students noted that if they had waited for peak Thursday temperatures, they might have had fully baked treats. It was a fantastic hands-on lesson in renewable energy, proving that even when the British weather doesn’t perfectly cooperate, the learning at St Mary’s never stops.
