Update 18th May 2020

Dear Parents / Carers,

As we start another week with lockdown restrictions in place I am writing to update you on where we are in terms of our planning.

Updated government information:

As you know from my message on Friday the government released a lot of information last week in relation to possible plans from June 1st. These are mainly for primary schools with some changes to support Year 10 and Year 12 to make sure their home learning is as effective as possible. You can read the guidance for parents and carers here:

The government are also set to release some further clarification for Secondary Head teachers to help with their planning.

We are well on the way with our planning and will continue to update you as these are completed. Our current work is looking at risk assessing the Academy and making sure our building and its facilities are safe to return to. This includes making sure we have enough hand washing and toilet facilities and are able to clean the building thoroughly during the day. In addition we need to ensure we have the correct capacity with staffing and the correct training for how to work in a new way once students start to return. As I said in Friday’s message we must not rush these plans and make sure we get them right so that everybody is safe.

Help from Year 10 and Year 12 Parents

Our plans are to offer Year 10 and Year 12 a face to face meeting to check how students are coping and offer some support with home learning. It may well be after June 1st before we are able to put our plans into place. We are currently looking at how we might then start to bring Year 10 and 12 into school, in very small groups of 10 – 14, dependent on classroom size, to offer some further support with home learning. In order to help us with this planning Year 10 and 12 parents will receive a survey via email and text this evening. I would be very grateful if you could complete this to help us with our planning.

Years 7-9 parents

Once we have completed plans for Year 10 and 12 we will start to plan out how we can offer similar support to Year 7-9. I am very concerned to make sure that we continue to offer the best possible online learning in the meantime and staff are currently working on developing and improving our current offer.

We will continue to set work using INSIGHT each day for students and would ask that you get in touch if there is a problem. The Academy also remains open for our provision for critical worker children and vulnerable students.

These are very difficult and testing times for everyone in our community. I am very grateful for your patience and understanding at this time. Everything we are doing is aimed at making sure our St Mary’s family stays safe and well. Thank you for your continued support,

Stay safe and keep praying
