St Mary’s Year 7 finish Runners Up in Lancashire Cup Finals
On a sunny afternoon at St Bedes Blackburn St Mary’s Year 7 football team battled hard but fell short at the last hurdle and finished Runners Up in the Lancashire Cup Finals. Against three of the best sides in Lancashire they won two games and lost one.
The first game was against Archbishop Temple, Preston and they started really strongly dominating the early stages with Whiteside and Turner creating several chances. It was inevitable that they would score and eventually Turner bundled the ball over the line to make it 1-0. At this point, they took the foot off the gas and let the opposition back in the game. They equalised soon after, game on. Their heads didn’t drop and they moved up a gear and scored a deserved winner when Turner slotted home his second. Some great saves from Kudlak ( an able deputy for the injured Henshall Flynn ) ensured the final score remained 2-1.
The second game was against a very physical and determined Haslingden side, who started very well and won most 50/50s. However the goal of the tournament changed the game completely. Picking the ball up from the Gudlak, Shaw then played a series of passes with Lees and Campbell before slotting home from close range. Lees then also produced an outstanding finish placing the ball in the top corner to make it 2-0. Surely the game was over. Haslingden didn’t think so and they dominated the rest of the game. Thain and Kudlak and the hardworking Burgess held strong and prevented the opposition scoring.
So a winner takes all game followed against Morecambe, however St Mary’s had to win because of an inferior goal difference. In the first half both teams cancelled each other out in a very cagey affair. St Mary’s could not break down a very well organised Morecambe team and the opposition deservedly took the lead in the second half. Despite some great defending by Dabrija, Morecambe ran out 3-0 winners, a score that did not reflect the whole game. A disappointing end but the lads can hold their heads high. Thanks to Mr Reidy for coming to support and the parents that also turned up.
A tremendous first season at St Mary’s – Blackpool League winners, JETEX 5 aside Runners Up and Lancashire Cup Runners Up.
Congratulations to Nicholas Henshall Flynn, Jakub Kudlak, Ethan Shaw, Christos Thain, Luke Smith ( injured so missed final ), Alex Lees (Capt), Jake Wallace, Jensen Burgess, Connor Campbell, Gabriel Dabrija
