A Masterclass in Molecular Chains

Two male secondary school students wearing safety goggles and black school blazers smile for the camera in a science laboratory. One student holds up a glass stirring rod, drawing a long, thin strand of synthesised nylon from a small glass beaker on the lab bench. A periodic table chart and scientific posters hang on the wall behind them.

This week, the club was delighted to welcome a surprise guest, Miss Parr, who delivered an insightful session on the science of polymers. Students explored the industrial origins of these versatile materials and engaged in a serious discussion regarding the ecological challenges posed by their disposal.

The highlight of the session was a hands-on experiment where students synthesised their very own polymer: nylon. The excitement continues into next week, as the club plans to put their creations to the test to determine exactly how much weight these student-made fibres can support.
