Other Information
The College's rule are simple and fair. They are based on a respect for self, others and the environment. The College's rules and disciplinary system works to ensure that good behaviour is acknowledged and reinforced and poor behaviour is challenged and changed.

Our aim is to ensure that St. Mary's is a calm. orderly and disciplined environment, with strong and enriching relationships, in which all students can learn and develop.
Promoting Positive Behaviour

Supporting Positive Behaviour
The College has a number of staff who work hard to help students to maintain their positive behaviour:

  • Form Tutors, Heads of Year, Heads of School and Senior Managers all provide care, support and guidance to young people on a daily basis.
  • In addition, the Learning Support Department, Lay-Chaplains and IMPACT Centre provide highly specialised, professional and intensive support for some students.
  • The College’s Social Inclusion Forum meets regularly to identify students who may benefit from additional help.
  • On occasions Pastoral Support Programmes are devised for students who are in danger of exclusion.

Rewarding Positive Behaviour
At St. Mary’s we wish to recognise and actively affirm students in their positive behaviour, work and contribution to the life of the College. The College has developed a range of rewards for students including stickers (Lower School), Postcards of Praise (Upper School) and Certificates and Letters of Commendation that are presented at termly Achievement Assemblies. At these assemblies a number of special “tokens” are presented for outstanding service, achievement or standards. In Lower School, stickers are awarded for high Standards, significant Achievements and notable Service (the SAS system). Standard Stickers are awarded by subject teachers to students who make a significant improvement in homework or behaviour over a half-term. In addition, form tutors present standards stickers, on a halftermly basis, to students who have very high standards of uniform, good attendance and punctuality (95%+) and consistently present an excellent homework diary. Achievement Stickers are awarded for an excellent piece of homework or classwork within a particular class. Service stickers are given to students who:

  • Help at Parents’ Evenings, Open Evenings and Assemblies.
  • Represent the College at sport or in drama or musical productions.
  • Make a significant contribution to charitable efforts or become members of a faith group.

Postcards of Praise are sent to parents to recognise and celebrate high standards, significant achievements and notable service of students in Years 10 and 11. At the end of Christmas and Easter Terms (Years 7-10) and Summer Term (Years 7-9) Rewards Trips are organised for students who achieve at least four of these five criteria:

  • 15 stickers/3 postcards of praise during a term
  • 90%+ attendance
  • 90%+ punctuality
  • less than three incident sheets
  • no exclusions

These Rewards Trips are subsidised by the College in recognition of the positive behaviour shown by the students who qualify to go on the trips.
